Erin waited a long time for her perfect family home. She eventually purchased a property that is well-suited to the Modern Farmhouse style: a large suburban plot located in The Hills Shire of Sydney. With fabulous bones but a tired brick exterior, it was in dire need of an update to suit her family of five.
The renovation needed to add character and street appeal, and extend the outdoor living spaces to suit the family’s lifestyle. Key to achieving the transformation was Hardie™ Oblique™ Cladding.
“Our vision for this project was to transform this dated home into a modern-day urban farmhouse, adding character and street appeal,” explains Lana from Three Birds Renovations.
Erin wanted to make the most of the outdoor living opportunities present in the original home, and that meant extending the veranda to double its size, creating outdoor seating, dining, and cooking zones with skylights.
“It feels so right,” says Erin. “The newly built outdoor barbecue area also features 300mm of Hardie™ Oblique™ Cladding on the front. It’s painted in Dulux Weathershield® Grey Port, tying in beautifully with the home's façade in a really creative use of the product.”
The Modern Farmhouse offers a seamless balance of traditional design and contemporary elements, referencing classic architecture with a focus on clean lines, open spaces, and materiality.
House 16 was all about reimagining a tired-looking brick façade into a Modern Farmhouse with a wow factor and street appeal. Lana points to some key features that helped bring the look to life:
“First up, we've mixed and matched the shiplap look of Hardie™ Oblique™ Cladding from the Hardie™ Architectural Collection with sections of the original brick, which is a fabulous way to blend the more traditional elements of the house with new features.”
“Mixing materials is a great way to add interest to any façade,” Lana adds. “The new black window frames were another key change to achieving this look. They make a sophisticated statement bringing the urban edge to this farmhouse”
The Modern Farmhouse style is a contemporary expression of classical farmhouse architecture. On House 16, Three Birds Renovation chose Hardie™ Oblique™ Cladding to deliver a fresh, sophisticated Modern Farmhouse home’s exterior, and inside, Axon™ Cladding’s interior application in two different ways. The bedroom features the wider groove 400mm.
With the laundry and powder room featuring the more traditional 133mm version.
“Unlike timber, Hardie™ fibre cement is rot resistant, and resistant to damage from termites, moisture, and stands up to harsh Australian weather conditions, so it's perfect for coastal homes and the Aussie climate,” Lana explains.
“And just when you think that sounds too good to be true, Axon™ Cladding comes pre-primed, which saves you time and money.”
They chose this Hardie™ Oblique™ Cladding for the exterior because they loved how it looks like a traditional shiplap board. “It's 14mm thick and is available in 200mm and 300mm widths. With this project, we used the wider 300mm boards,” says Lana.
“The cladding breaks up the facade and adds another dimension,” adds Erin.
The boards also come in two lengths. “The Hardie™ Oblique™ Cladding 2750mm boards suit common wall heights, which helps reduce waste, while the 4200mm length gives tall walls a continuous look, reducing the need for horizontal joints,” says Lana.
“And the best part is that it only requires a carpenter to install, and a painter to paint, which is a huge benefit for any renovator saving time and money.”
